On January 1st, 2023, Denise Paul Hatch has begun her first term as Constable of Marion County and Center Township. It is a moment of firsts. She is the first Black woman, Buddhist, and Trinidadian to take the position.
With a Bachelor of Science degree from New Hampshire College, Constable Hatch has decades of political and business experience, owned her own construction company, worked in the US Senate in DC, and worked on Obama's and Bernie's presidential campaigns. As a landlord and property owner, she is also very experienced and knowledgeable with landlord tenant law and disputes, a critical part of the Constable's duties.
What is a Township Constable?
Township constables are administrators and listed jurisdiction law enforcement officers and have 3 primary duties: act as township small claims court bailiff, serve legal papers on defendants and plaintiffs, and assist in landlord/tenant dispute resolution enforcement. They can & do cooperate with county sheriffs and IMPD when needed.
Paving the Way for
Decriminalized Marijuana
Denise Paul Hatch ran for Mayor of Indianapolis in 2020 with an important part of her platform advocating for the decriminalization of marijuana. Many legal experts told her it could not be done but voters were excited at the possibility of the change. After the 2020 election, the new Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Myears decriminalized possession of Marijuana under an ounce. As Center Township Constable, and a member of law enforcement, Denise will continue to advocate for the Legalization of Marijuana.
